When people initially think of training a puppy, the first thing that comes to mind is housetraining. Housetraining your puppy is a part of an overall training process. Before you start training your puppy read over this puppy training advice to get some helpful hints to make the process easier!

Dog training advice-Teach Him to Sit

Many people train their dog to sit so they can show off how gifted their dog is when their relatives or friends come over.  It is great to train your dog to be an entertainer, and he may even become famous.  However, the sit command servers other purposes as well.

The sit command is useful when you need to bring your dog under control.   For example, putting a leash on your dog when you need to take him for a walk. If he is excited and jumping about , you need to command him to sit so you can do this easily. The same command comes in handy during a walk when your dog needs to stop pulling and tugging the leash.

Begin teaching this command using dog treats .  Gently “place” the dog in a sitting position, and say the word “sit” distinctly and clearly.  When the puppy stands on all fours, hold the treat in one hand directly in front of him and lift it slowly just above his head, using your free hand to gently push his rear to the ground.  Keep saying the word “sit.” When he sits on command, give him the treat .

Do this preferably several times a day.  After a short while, your dog will sit on command without the use of the puppy treats.

Teach Him to Lie Down

When your dog is in a sitting position, take a treat and place it under his nose.  Once he knows you have a treat, slowly lower it to the floor and “pull” it slowly away from him.

At first, you may need to prompt his body gently into a lying position until he grasps the general idea.  Be sure when working with him to use the “down” command often and distinctly.

Consistency is crucial, and always consider that some dogs take longer to train than others, so maintain patience.   Always use the same verbal command when training your puppy. One word commands work best.

A silent hand command is also an option. For example, two fingers might be used to indicate sit, while a balled up fist may signify the down command. When you teach your puppy a new command, use it often and remember..practice practice practice.
