Having a new dog can be a lot of fun, but training him is often a challenge. Some trainers see a solution in training collars for dogs, although it takes a bit of research in order to know exactly which training collar is the best or most appropriate to your dog’s situation and characteristics. There are several manufacturers of training collars for dogs, and each manufacturer usually offers several models, each one with specific qualities.
While at first, the selection of a training collar can be overwhelming, if you are clear on what you need the collar for, then the process becomes easier.
Types of training collars for dogs
Choosing the right type of collar can be key in the success of the training. While it’s true that every collar was made with the intention of training, each one differs in its approach. Electronic collars are the first option to come to mind. The electronic collar gives the dog a small, harmless, jolt of static electricity whenever the dog misbehaves.
Choke collars are another option. These collars will constrict the dog’s neck when force is applied, either by the owner or by the dog’s resistance. It is important to get proper instruction on how to use this type of collar to prevent injury to your dog. Finally, there are citronella spray collars, which spray the dog’s mouth and nose with a citronella scent which is disgusting to dogs whenever they disobey an order or incurs in bad behavior.
No matter which training collar you choose it is important to ensure that your dog is shown the correct behaviour and understands why he was given a correction signal. Without this corrective training he will tend to become fearful and just see the collar as a punishment. In the end, the training collar will slowly become obsolete as the dog assimilates the new behavior and incorportates it as normal part of its life.
