Want To Stop Dog Barking?

June 15th, 2010

As a pet owner, you love your dog, but you know how irritated you end up when it seems like there is simply no way to turn the maddening bark off. Have you ever found yourself creating as much noise as your dog, yelling at her trying to get her to stop barking? Well don’t give up as there are options.

When it comes to training your dog in the area of bark control there are various methods you can use and so many times it comes down to a personal preference or approach. The essential thing to realize though with any training, is that your dog must learn that she needs to obey you as you are the master. Rewards are an effective way of making this point.

It’s also vital to train your dog in such a way as to never cause your dog to be scared of you. Would you bother to respond to someone who you felt was going to harm you in some way? So you can find much better methods.

So for stop dog barking training, start by considering why it is your dog is barking. Dog barking is allowable. However, unnecessary, continual barking is a different matter. The principal thing is to help your dog see the difference between the two.

Bark collars containing a device that  sends out a gentle shock when the dog barks is one way some owners have taken to turn the bark off. There are various types out there that have different functionality in when the shock is generated and variations in strength. You hear good reports about the success of these bark deterrents, however this is not the first choice for many.

The citronella bark collar is another possibility that has come onto the market. The device on these collars spray citronella into the air in front of the dog after the dog barks. Because dogs do not like the citronella smell they learn to stop barking to avoid the smell. Though this seems a more humane of bark control, it might not be the first pick for an indoor dog silencer.

Another option to the bark collars to stop dog barking is an ultrasonic sound device. When a dog starts barking these devices release a sound frequency that is detected by dogs though inaudible to humans. The dog will stop barking as the sound will interrupt them. The bonus of this system is it will not only stop your dog from barking, it will silence the other dogs who may be the ones causing your dog to bark.

Non-dog owners have even turned to using these ultrasonic dog barking devices if they have neighbours who have not trained their dogs to stop barking. They will put the device close enough to become activated by the dog’s barking and it’ll do its thing; a subtle way to turn the bark off.

Remember dogs are dogs and barking is what they do. You don’t want them not to bark, you just want them to bark befittingly. Positive reinforcement goes a long way in training your dog. So if you commend  your dog for not barking when she is silent, you may be pleasantly surprised at how discriminating your dog becomes in choosing when to bark, regardless of what approach to bark control you go with.
